These readings made me think deeply on the "What does it mean to be educated?" question. What I have found from reading these articles is that their is no simple answer to this question. Every person that is educated, like the three people in these articles, have received an education for a different purpose. One thing they each have in common is the ability to receive and apply knowledge to positively impact their lives. For Joseph Laycock (first article), the education he has learned from his martial arts he has used to help him battle stress and all problems in his life. He also learned that through struggle he has found the will to succeed. Micheal Oatman has found that he can escape his issues through education. With this knowledge, he gained motivation to thrive in his studies and led a path to a better future. In the third article, the authors grandma learned the importance and benefit of patience and the ability to do what needs to be done. She found that if she wanted to be successful, she had to be open to learn.
Each of these three educated individuals, had obtained knowledge that they applied in their lives to succeed. Perhaps this is the meaning of education. Some people may know a lot of information and abilities, but lack the ability to apply this knowledge in real life experiences. Perhaps it is not what you know that defines your level of education, rather the ability to apply what you know in life to improve/enhance the quality of ones life.
